Page 123 meme…tagged

I was tagged by Ed Kohler at The Deets for the Page 123 meme, which is kind of like a old-time chain letter disguised in modern day blogging. So here are the instructions:

1. Pick up the nearest book (of at least 123 pages).
2. Open the book to page 123.
3. Find the fifth sentence.
4. Post the next three sentences.
5. Tag five people.

So here goes…The nearest book was on Kyle’s nightstand, a book that I read in December while on vacation in Uruguay, The Count of Monte Cristo.

Arrived at the door of the inn, he halted. It would have been difficult to say whether it was the horse that stopped the man or the man that stopped the horse. In any case the man dismounted, and, dragging the animal after him by the bridle, tied it to a dilapidated shutter.

I don’t want to give the story away if you’re not familiar with the book or the movie. I have to say that I had set up myself for disappointment, since I read the book after seeing the movie. But, since I was in Uruguay with limited access to English-printed books, I forged through and was pleasantly surprised. I loved the movie and I ended up loving the book even more.

As for the last part of the instructions, to tag five people to continue on with the chain letter, I’m not going to do this. Basically, I don’t really know that many people with blogs, so it’s pretty tough for me. However, being an avid reader myself, I am interested to know what you are reading. Follow the directions and post as a comment to this entry. Happy reading!

  1. It drives us, for lack of a better term, coo coo. And part of the reason we struggle is because there is no hard-and-fast clarity about what qualifies anything as “cool”. It needs to be original, but only semioriginal: It would be legitimately inventive (and kind of “out there”) to casually walk around with a petrified skull of an orangutan under your arm for no obvious reason, but this would only seem cool to a select class of performance artist.
